What is Skin Care ‘Layering’ 

The purpose of proper layering of skin care steps and the application of skin care products is to maximize the benefit from each product application including its nutrient absorption, while working with the skin’s surface as it changes with each product application. Just as the skin care steps are designed to work with the skin in sequence, the products used within the skin care system of layering must be specifically designed to work together to yield the maximum synergistic benefit.       

Using products in the right order matters. Just as undergarments aren’t the last item of clothing you might wear (we hope not) when you get dressed, there is a scientific reason why skin care products are applied in sequential layered order – especially after the skin is properly cleansed.  

The bare, cleansed and gently exfoliated skin, is exposed right after its cleansed. The skin has not had the time to secret its natural oils (sebum) to protect it, as it is designed to do when it feels its skin is not protected (it does this all day long, naturally, but more so if it feels dry, or it needs to cool down, for example). By applying a non-comedogenic (non pore clogging) lotion with an emulsion base of water and natural nutrient rich organic oil helps nourish, protect and helps the skin heal or renew itself.

Without proper cleansing that includes gentle exfoliation, anything that follows will be built upon a flawed foundation.

Layered, sequential application of skin care products is a technique often associated with its use and origin in Asia. Of note, however, is that a developed in America skin care system, the Metrin Skincare System, has used the concept of skin care layering successfully since 1932 – for over 90 years. It is not a new skin care technique but an established, proven skin care method – a skin care layering system with near century long proven effectiveness.

The First layer

The first layer not only nourishes, heals and hydrates the skin, it also serves as a foundation for other layers to bond with the skin – to help create a powerful, synergistic emulsion as you apply the products directly on the skin of your face. The first product should be a blend of water (to provide hydration) and nourishing and protective oil as a base (not as an add-on ingredient that may or may not be in sufficient quantity (i.e., “fairy dusting”) that should be a perfect blend – not too oily, not too watery and non-comedogenic (won’t clog your pores).  

Often people think that the first layer should be thinner than the products that follow, but that’s not the right metric to be concerned about.

The Second Layer

The next layer is the toner like lotion, to provide additional nourishment, ingredients that add and help maintain hydration, and with healing properties that help the skin renew (on its own, but more powerfully when layered).    

The best protection for the skin is to maintain its resiliency, its ability to heal and renew. While gentle exfoliation helps the skin’s physical renewal process, proven ingredients like allantoin helps the skin heal from microscopic abrasions, and the natural oligo peptides of 20 of the 22 amino acids we need are found in aloe vera in abundance within the #4 Protective Lotion of the Metrin Skincare System.  This lotion also protects the skin through its gentle anti-bacterial ingredient to help the skin maintain its acid mantle, its skin biome.    

Why is Aloe Vera a powerful ingredient in skin care?

 It provides 20 of the 22 human required amino acids (also known as peptides/ oligopeptides) and 7 of the 8 essential amino acids.

• A peptide is a compound consisting of 2 or more amino acids.
• Oligopeptides have 10 or fewer amino acids.

It also contains salicylic acid that possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Lignin, an inert substance, when included in topical preparations, enhances penetrative effect of the other ingredients into the skin.

Saponins that are the soapy substances form about 3% of the gel and have cleansing and antiseptic properties.

The Final Layer

A final, non-comedogenic nourishing lotion infused with vitamins is applied as final layer to complete the fresh nutrient rich healing emulsion trifecta directly on the skin. In addition to its high vitamin E composition and nutrients, the added benefit of the high oleic certified organic sunflower oil is in its excellent ability to act as a ‘carrier oil’ to deliver all the nutrients within the freshly created emulsion to the skin. As vitamin E has high anti-oxidant properties, it also helps to preserve the nutrient quality of vitamins in its delivery to the skin.
